I'm working on a strange email issue today. One of my clients is getting a high number of bounced messages at his domain, all being returned to non-existent users at his domain. It looks like this has been going on for several weeks.
I thought I had some ideas on what could be causing this (trojan, open relay, virus, etc.), but have mostly eliminated those. Could it be simply that multiple spammers are using my client's domain for return addresses on spam? If so, why are they using this particular domain? What makes this domain special?
Update: It appears it is just a spammer or spammers who have decided to use my client's domain for the return addresses on their spam. Hopefully they will move along and pick on another domain for a while. At least the AppRiver spam filtering is doing an excellent job of keeping the bounced messages out of my client's mail queue.
